Anonymous Vows to 'Destroy' Facebook on November 5, 2011

A YouTube video labelled as a message from Anonymous claimed that "Operation Facebook" would take place on November 5. its aim was to destroy the social network on the grounds that it abused the privacy of users, the video said.

We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy.

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. Source

You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.

The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.

Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.

This is our world now. We exist without nationality, without religious bias. We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. We have the right to not live as slaves.

We are anonymous
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to create a brand page for Facebook if Photoshop could be used? Now it can, thanks to German digital communications agency 247Grad.

The company, which boasts clients including Deutsche Telekom and Procter & Gamble, developed the Facebook Page GUI (graphical user interface), which allows its developers to create entire pages for clients, in single Photoshop files, and then export and upload them to the social network.
This tool also creates Facebook plug-ins for websites using Photoshop.
Here’s how 247Grad describes the Facebook Page GUI:
Up to now, designing a Facebook page turned out to be quite complicated. Every graphic had to be prepared individually, uploaded in Facebook, readjusted, and uploaded again. This was performed many and many times to achieve one reasonable result — a time-killing and expensive process. Therefore, 247Grad PLC’s team of designers was trying to find a more effective solution. Their result is the Facebook GUI PSD! Here every graphic of a Facebook page is partitioned into individual layers. Now it’s possible to design an entire Facebook page in a quick, simple, and completed way. Subsequently, you only need to export and upload your files once.
Readers: Did you think it was possible to create a Facebook page using only a single Photoshop document?

A delicate dance of moves and counter moves between Facebook, Google Plus and app developers has broken out — evidenced by the changes in social games both companies announced on Thursday — and is leaving some wonder if the competition is getting to the social networking site.

Google Plus launched its game stream platform yesterday, and Facebook immediately replied with an announcement of its own set of games enhancements, explaining why their new homepage tweaks and enhancements are making games more accessible to users, as well as making it easier for friends to share game activities.

Talk about letting the games begin!

Now TechCrunch says that stealth new platform policies that Facebook announced last month may be a response to the rise of Google Plus.

What’s as noteworthy as the policies themselves is the fact that the changes were not announced on the developer blog or any of the usual places on Facebook.

Here’s the first significant policy change as reported by TechCrunch:

I.10. Applications may reward users with virtual currency or virtual goods in exchange for user actions that do not involve third parties, but rewards for user actions that involve third parties must be powered by Facebook Credits by integrating Facebook Credits offers.

That seems reasonable, as Facebook only wants its credit system used as a plethora of new credit systems and third party developers exist. Now, here’s the big change:

I.11. Apps on Facebook may not integrate, link to, promote, distribute, or redirect to any app on any other competing social platform.

That’s huge, and means that any app that runs on Facebook is prohibited from integrating or linking in any way linking to any app on a competing social platform.

While this new policy is consistent with Facebook’s advertising policies, the decision could affect a broad array of platforms including gamers, Google Plus and even Twitter.

And there’s a whiff of anti-competitiveness to the new policy, which probably account for the quiet manner in which the changes were rolled out.

TechCrunch quoted a Facebook spokesperson:

As many companies do, we have policies that prohibit apps from directing users to apps on competing social platforms. We recently updated these policies to ensure they’re clear for developers building on our platform.

But it’s really not very clear what the new policy means for standalone sites, such as Twitter. And it’s really such a bold move against Facebook’s competition that we wonder whether a public relations brouhaha is already brewing. Either Facebook is going to have to walk back the policies, or further explain its impact to specific audiences.

Readers, do you think Facebook’s new gaming changes and developer policies are anti-competitive?

Paul Ceglia has fabricated his supporting documents in the claim to half ownership of Facebook — attorneys for the social network have told the court that they found “smoking gun” evidence of fraud upon examining his computers.

Facebook’s legal team said this in a federal court filing last night, based on forensic tests of Paul Ceglia’s computers, hard drives, electronic storage media, email and a paper version of the contract.
The court filing included the following, according to Bloomberg:
Embedded in the electronic data on Ceglia’s computer… Defendants have uncovered smoking-gun evidence that the purported contract at the heart of this case is a fabrication…
We’ve asked for copies of the “smoking gun” material and will update this post with embeds as soon as we can.
Whatever this evidence is, its existence is hardly a surprise. Ceglia has a history of forgery, and already four different law firms have dropped him as a client after examining his documentation.
Readers, what do you think about the latest chapter in Ceglia’s case?

Every summer, most businesses see activity slump as more people take off on vacation — so any change in Facebook behavior most likely follows this pattern, right?

We get a kick out of the attention-getting attempt by Bangalore-based InRev Systems and Simplify 360 in trying to peg May 15 through August 1`of this year as showing an absolute decline in Facebook rather than an old familiar seasonal pattern.

Adjust the statistics to look melodramatic — among pre-existing fans of pages — likes appear to drop by five percent over the past six weeks, but comment rates have dropped by 30 percent in that same time period. Now that’s on a per-fan basis.

Once you adjust for the growth in fans, comments per page only drops by five percent and likes go up by three percent.

Actually, average fan counts have gone up 18 percent in the past six weeks.

Click Here To See The Decline of FaceBook

To allow you to better savor these findings, we’ve embedded a copy of InRev and Simplify 360′s slideshow below. Readers, let us know what you think about what’s really happened to likes and comments during the past six weeks.

Facebook has acquired Push Pop Press, which publishes e-books optimized for the iPad. Financial terms of the deal remain unknown.

Facebook executives have previously said the company wanted to acquire around 15 startups this year, roughly twice the number bought in 2010 — the transactions often involve a selection of assets with a recruitment of talent, rather than a complete purchase of everything associated with the target.

That said, Here’s what Push Pop Press has said about the acquisition on its own blog:

Last year Push Pop Press set off to re-imagine the book. We created a new way of publishing and exploring text, images, audio, video and interactive graphics, then teamed up with Melcher Media and Al Gore to create a new kind of book.

The result is Al Gore’s Our Choice, which was released earlier this year. The response has been incredible. Tech columnist David Pogue of The New York Times summed it up by saying, “this is one of the most elegant, fluid, impressive apps you’ve ever seen. It’s a showpiece for the new world of touch-screen gadgets.”

Now we’re taking our publishing technology and everything we’ve learned and are setting off to help design the world’s largest book, Facebook.

Although Facebook isn’t planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories. With millions of people publishing to Facebook each day, we think it’s going to be a great home for Push Pop Press.

Al Gore’s Our Choice will remain available for purchase, and we’ve decided that our future profits from the book will be donated to The Climate Reality Project. There are no plans to continue publishing new titles or building out our publishing platform that was in private beta. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported and expressed interest in Push Pop Press.

Both Push Pop Press and Facebook share a passion for improving the way we share and explore ideas and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future holds.

Mike Matas
Kimon Tsinteris
Co-founders, Push Pop Press

Facebook offered the following prepared statement about the deal:

We’re thrilled to confirm that we’ve acquired Push Pop Press, a startup whose groundbreaking software changes the way people publish and consume digital content. We can’t wait for co-founders Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris to get started, and for some of the technology, ideas and inspiration behind Push Pop Press to become part of how millions of people connect and share with each other on Facebook.

Click here to see what our friends at Inside Facebook have to say about the deal.

Readers, what do you think about Facebook’s latest acquisition?

Facebook users in Singapore don’t really understand how to use virtual currency to buy premium items in social games, but seem willing to experiment after learning more about the concept.

That comes from a new study by the Asian payment processor MOL Global

In MOL’s Singapore Social Gaming 2011 Poll Report, nearly half of the 1,221 respondents to the question, “Would you use virtual currency?” said they had never heard of it. Another 30 percent said no and only 25 percent responded positively.

When presented as, “I am likely to use virtual currency if…,” 48 percent of the 1,513 respondents to this question. said they still would not use it; 40 percent said they would do so if it was safe and easy to use, and 15 percent wanted the virtual currency to pay for a range of items.
Pay To Play

And out of 3,104 people that responded to the question of whether they’d pay for online game credits, 72 percent said no, 18 percent said maybe, and only 10 percent said yes.

Turning to respondents who actually do pay for online games, of 1,187 people who shared their preferred online payment method, 41 percent chose prepaid cards, 33 percent went with credit cards, and 26 percent chose mobile payments.

Of the 2,133 who revealed the amount they spend monthly on Facebook games, 83 percent dish out less than $20, nine percent said more than $50, and eight percent admitted to $20 to $50.

Here are six more related questions from the survey, and their answers:

* I will pay for social games (683 respondents): 43 percent to make them fun, 39 percent to play better, and 18 percent if it is easy to buy game credits.
* I purchase more game credits for (416): 50 percent exclusive in-game items, 31 percent bonus game credits, and 19 percent lucky draw.
* I buy online game credits to (1,101): 31 percent get exclusive in-game items, 17 percent to quickly move up one level, and 52 percent both.
* I have purchased online games from (930): 16 percent other games on Facebook, 10 percent Zynga games, and 74 percent have never paid.
* I have used Facebook Credits (3,657): 45 percent no, 41 percent yes, 14 percent had not heard of them.
* I would use Facebook Credits to (753): 37 percent buy products and services, 22 percent donate to charity, and 41 percent both.

MOL Global President of Global Operations Craig White summed up these findings:

Social gaming is mainstream. For Facebook users, social gaming helps to create deeper engagement and interaction among friends. Social gaming is also a key driver for virtual currency. Although gaming is predominantly a fun and free activity on Facebook, gaming is a business. Like most commercial content and applications on Facebook, the monetization of these games is important and creates a unique ecosystem — game developers and publishers, distribution channels, and payment service providers.

Social gaming presents a marketing opportunity that connects companies directly with gamers in a most engaging and creative platform. This is why businesses in Singapore should explore social gaming marketing initiatives.

Readers: Do you think the social gaming landscape in Singapore is very different from that in the U.S.?

Florida wildlife officials are going undercover online to catch poachers who take to Facebook to boast about catching their prey.

From underage drinking to pornography and every crime in between, some criminals recklessly share their exploit with Facebook friends, mistakenly thinking law enforcement won’t find the photos, videos status updates that end up becoming evidence.

The lawbreakers’ online friends often become whistleblowers. In Florida, tipsters can earn $100 for each tip they share with wildlife officials.

Take the case of Brian Spuler, who speared a snook in the Intracoastal Waterway in June, which is off-season for the fish.

Spuler proudly posted photos of his catch on Facebook and gave the fish to his Mom for dinner. Days later, he was arrested and fined $350, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The Internet Crimes Unit of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission formed in late 2009 to address the growing number of Internet-related calls that now number about 10 a week in South Florida — all of them involving people who post images of hunting and fishing out of season.

The urge to brag on the Internet is a boon to investigators, who use the online photos, videos and comments as evidence. They create fake Facebook accounts to befriend fishermen and hunters or, most often, access photos through a tipster’s account.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Spuler said that investigators violated his privacy, and that he didn’t know it was illegal to fish snook at the time. However, he said he thinks he allowed public access to his photos. Whoops! He also told the newspaper:

Every day I see people posting pictures of marijuana and cocaine, and I get in trouble for this?

Readers, what do you think of Florida wildlife officials’ use of Facebook to catch poachers?
