Text from comments on Facebook pages now appears in Google‘s search indices.
As initially reported by Digital Inspiration, comments made via systems such as Disqus, Facebook Comments, and Intense Debate were not being picked up by Google, as search engines could not read text within iFrame coding.
ZDNet’s Friending Facebook added that the same applied to commenting engines that ran on AJAX.
According to Digital Inspiration, Googlebots, which crawl webpages, are now treating text in Facebook comments like any other text, including it in indices and thus making it searchable.
The blog added that Google users can now use “commenter name * commenter title” in search queries to uncover all comments made by the subject via Facebook’s comments platform.
Friending Facebook pointed out that users who had shunned the Facebook comments box due to its lack of search-engine-optimization-friendliness may think twice.
And Econsultancy added that the more Facebook expands outside of its walled garden, the more effort privacy-conscious users will have to put in to maintain the level of privacy they seek.
We wonder whether this change will motivate SEO marketers to add commenting  to their to-do lists — if that happens, we might expect to see more people putting website addresses in comments, hoping to pick up traffic that way.

Year three of the Facebook fellowship program is about to kick off, and the social network said it will double the number of awards this time around.
The Facebook Fellowship Program supports PhD students working on research in the areas of social web and technology. Applications are due December 16, and the 10 award recipients will be notified on February 1.
Each winner will receive tuition payment, a $30,000 stipend, $2,500 toward a PC, $5,000 toward conference attendance and travel, and a trip to Facebook’s headquarters.
Updates, details on how to submit entries, and frequently asked questions are available via the Facebook fellowship program page.
The social network said in announcing the beginning of the application process:
As Facebook evolves to provide a richer set of social interactions on the site, we constantly encounter new and challenging technical problems spanning a broad range of topics in computer science. We believe that engaging the academic community is key to finding the best long-term solutions to these problems.
This year, we are also increasing focus in systems areas (compilers, databases, distributed computing, fault tolerance, and networking). These areas represent a substantial portion of challenges we face, and we want the Fellowship Program to reflect this. At the same time, we want to continue to award fellowships in the other disciplines like Internet economics, machine learning, data science, and social computing. Doubling the program allows us to do both.

We all use facebook but still alot of us are unware of how to use smileys in chat. Some of us just think how the other person have sent a smiley. Well it is very simple to send smileys in facebook chat.

You have to just enter a code and it will automatically convert into a smiley. I am providing here a complete list of smiley codes that can be used on facebook.

Google Plus users have clicked the +1 button for the homepage of which social network most?
If you guessed Google Plus, you guessed incorrectly.
The Sociable reported that the Facebook homepage was the subject of around 44,000 clicks of the +1 button on Google Plus, which is 1,000 more than the Google Plus homepage gets.
What’s more, the total for the Google Plus homepage has barely moved since The Sociable began tracking it Sept. 25, while Facebook’s total has risen from around 36,000 on that date.
The Sociable said it used Google’s +1 Chrome extension to obtain the figures, adding that Twitter has seen modest growth, as well, at some 14,000 +1 clicks currently versus 12,000 September 25.

Tinychat, creator of a video chat app for Facebook with 1.6 million monthly active users, is going Apple hunting.
Tinychat version 2.0 for the iPhone and iPad allows users to video chat with up to 12 people. The app — which debuted on the iTunes App Store Wednesday and is available free-of-charge — is compatible with 3G and WiFi, and it will work with 3GS or higher iPhones and all iPads.
While the description of version 2.0 of the app points out that it “no longer requires Facebook,” it does allow users to join Tinychat rooms on the social network (see video below).

The information on the left-hand side of Tinychat’s entry in the iTunes App Store also warns of “frequent/intense profanity or crude humor; frequent/intense sexual content or nudity; and frequent/intense alcohol, tobacco, or drug use or references,” saying users must be at least 17 to download the app. What exactly is going on in these chat rooms?
Readers: Have you ever used Tinychat or any other video chat applications for Facebook, and would you add one to your iPhone or iPad?

Facebook still meets our need for speed, once again finishing atop the ranking of average response time and just off the pace in availability of social media sites from SmartBear Software’s AlertSite.
The third quarter of 2011 marks the seventh installment of AlertSite’s quarterly Web Performance Index for Social Networks, and Facebook has finished at the top of the heap every single time.
Facebook’s 0.73-second average response time, however, rose slightly from 0.7 seconds in the second quarter.

Facebook received some minor bad news on the availability front, as YouTube outperformed it for the third quarter with a mark of 99.98 percent, dropping the social network and its 99.96 percent figure into second place.

As AlertSite pointed out, Facebook’s performance has continued to improve steadily, for the most part, despite soaring past 800 million members and seeing many of those members spend more time on the network.
Readers: Have you noticed any fluctuations in Facebook’s performance, in terms of speed or availability?

Facebook might be upgrading an application or simply defending its brand, but the social network yesterday obtained seven domain names related to the secure socket layer protocol and notifications.
Fusible reported that the social network registered for domain names Monday including Facebook-SSL.net, Facebook-SSL.org, FacebookNotifier.com, FacebookNotifier.org, NotifierFacebook.com, NotifierFacebook.net, and NotifierFacebook.org.
Those URL registrations came on the same day that Facebook finally launched its iPad app and announced the debut of Facebook platform for mobile.

Facebook had made SSL mandatory for all third-party applications on the social network as of October 1.
Athough Facebook already has its own Desktop Notifications, it’s labeled as an experimental prototype that has only been tested on Macintosh OS X 10.5 and no other operating system. This app has just over 40,000 active monthly users, a mere sliver of of the social network’s total of more than 800 million members.
Whether the notifier web addresses would ultimately serve up a more expansive application for Facebook remains to be seen, but the registrations could simply be a legal tactic.
Often the social network acquires domain names as part of a pre-emptive legal strategy, to proactively defend Facebook’s brand against would-be squatters; that strategy could very well explain this latest batch of seven registrations.

Mobile advertising in the U.S. will reach $2.55 billion in spending by 2014, up from $1.1 billion in 2011. That’s the kind of outlook that Facebook has in mind with the upgrade of its platform for handheld devices and applications.
That’s according to LeadBolt, which has its eyes on 4.85 billion people projected to use mobile phones by 2015.
The mobile advertising provider, citing figures from eMarketer, also estimates that:
  • 28.9 million people (or 12 percent of the U.S. adult population) will have e-readers by 2012, up from 20.6 million in 2011;
  • By 2013, there will be 91.5 million mobile gamers and 35.6 million mobile coupon users;
LeadBolt also refrains that in today’s market:
  • Tablets represent 1.8 percent of Internet traffic;
  • More than 350 million active users currently access Facebook through mobile devices.
  • People who access Facebook on mobile devices are twice as active on the social network as those who don’t, and
  • Android is now the number one smartphone platform.
The outlook for the mobile sector was a driving force behind Facebook’s introduction of its mobile platform yesterday; the social network announced that Social Channels, previously available only to websites and apps on Facebook.com, will now allow mobile developers to use bookmarks, requests, and the newsfeed to help drive discovery and distribution of their apps.
Facebook also announced that developers can now tap into its Facebook Credits payment system and use it exclusively, ensuring a consistent experience no matter how the apps are accessed.
Readers, are you looking forward to more mobile-based Facebook apps?

U.K. visitors who’d strayed from Facebook during the summer months returned in September.
Experian Hitwise reported that Facebook accounted for almost 52 percent of U.K. visits to social networks in September, up 3.08 percent from 48.86 percent in August.
The only other social networking site to see a gain in the U.K. in September was LinkedIn, which trickled up 0.13 percent, to 0.96 percent of U.K. visits to social networks in September, from 0.83 percent in August.
As for the unlucky ones:
  • YouTube fell 1.05 percent, to 22.5 percent in September from 23.55 percent in August;
  • Twitter lost .47 percent, 3.4 percent, 3.87 percent, respectively;
  • Yahoo Answers lost .08 percent, 2.34 percent, 2.42 percent;
  • Gumtree lost .03 percent, 1.16 percent, 1.19 percent;
  • Tumblr lost .08 percent, .84 percent, .92 percent;
  • Moneysavingexpert lost .03 percent, .43 percent, .47 percent;
  • Myspace lost.04 percent, .39 percent, .42 percent; and
  • Moshi Monsters lost .12 percent, .37 percent, .49 percent.

Experian Hitwise pointed out that October is the second busiest month for social media traffic.
Like the company’s Marketing Research Analyst James Murray added:
December is always the biggest month of the year for social media usage, but our seasonal trend data show that October is the second-busiest month of the year. Brands need to start capitalizing on this traffic and increased usage now in order to ensure that the impact of their social interaction will carry through to the crucial Christmas sales period.
With the summer holiday season now over, Facebook has bounced back to take nearly 52 percent of all visits to social networking sites. Social media as a whole experiences a dry patch during July and August, but September always kick-starts usage again with students starting university terms, kids going back to school, and the working population returning from holiday.
Readers, do you find that your social media usage subsides in the summer and rebounds in the fall?

  Timing is everything when it comes to marketing on Facebook, and TBG Digital believes deploying ads at the proper time could be worth up to 116 percent.
The Facebook-focused digital ad agency released its analysis of more than 2 billion impressions Wednesday, and it found that focusing on time of day can improve the effectiveness of Facebook ads, citing as examples the fact that male consumers are 42 percent more likely to complete an online transaction via Facebook during evening hours than women are, while users 50 and older do most of their buying during the morning hours.
TBG arrived at the results by examining cost per acquisition and sales volume, using its ONE Media Manager platform.
TBG managing director, North America Patrick Toland said in an interview:
The obvious thing is that the ads that you react to that are simple to complete are going to be more successful at a time when you may be busy. If I see an ad to sign up for free golf balls, I’m much less likely to interact with it at 9 a.m., when I’m working, than I am at 6 p.m. People who are more likely to be in down time during the day are going to perform better.
Traditionally, English pubs close at 11 p.m., so if you put the gambling houses’ ads up at 11:30 p.m., they’re a winner.
Dayparting is one of the few targeting strategies that doesn’t cost any more to implement. It’s a really smart strategy to execute.
Toland added that TBG started as a full-service digital agency 10 years ago and made the decision to focus solely on Facebook two years ago, becoming one of the largest buyers of third-party Facebook ads, which are purchased via bidding.
The agency was one of the first three partners for the social network’s application-programming interface, and it constructed its bid-management and optimization platform in November 2009. TBG has some 110 employees in seven offices worldwide, with operations mainly in Manila, San Francisco, and London, and the company’s client roster is at approximately 100.
CEO Simon Mansell said in a release:
When you think about how people use Facebook at different times of the day, it makes sense that adverts would perform differently. When people are relaxing, they are likely to respond differently than when they are talking with their friends, although people do both of these on Facebook, of course. Most of our clients are brands that want to run at scale, so this data do not mean we pause campaigns at different times, but rather we bid more or less aggressively depending on the time of day — this is one of the ways we have generated significant uplifts in performance.

  Money can’t buy you love, and it can’t buy you real Facebook fans, either, but that doesn’t stop operations like BuyRealFacebookFans.com from continuing to mine the cliché, “A fool and his (or her) money are soon parted.”
BuyRealFacebookFans.com promises 1,000 likes within 4 to 7 days for $57, 5,000 likes within 12 to 20 days for $197, or 10,000 likes within 20 to 30 days for $297 — all with a money-back guarantee.
This outfit emailed us offering the above along with a request to do a guest post. Sorry, but that’s not going to happen.
Social Brawn Chief Executive Officer Tony Thor penned an AllFacebook post in June titled, “Should You Buy Facebook Fans? Maybe Not …” Thor examined what really happens when users shell out money to services such as BuyRealFacebookFans.com, and how marketers and brand managers can really attract Facebook fans. Below are some of the claims from BuyRealFacebookFans.com, and Thor’s thoughts on the niche in general:
BuyRealFacebookFans.com says:
We have a large network of gaming, shopping, and entertainment websites, where we provide free content including: videos, images, games, and shopping coupons. In exchange for access to this free content, we showcase your fan page to a large pool of potential fans. This process ensures you that the likes a voluntary and completely real. We aim to provide you with real people, for successful Facebook marketing.
BuyRealFacebookFans.com works exclusively with real human beings that will interact with your material, your comments, and, ultimately, with your product. These are not dummy accounts! With millions of Facebook fans, we have one of the largest platforms to get you the Facebook fans you need. This is a proven, effective way of identifying and getting potential customers. If you get Facebook fans from us, we make your dream come into reality.
Thor:
Most fan-selling websites are just middlemen. They send your orders to companies in India, Pakistan, and Singapore. These outfits use spammy, hacker tactics to provide you your “100 percent real and targeted” fans.
How do I know this? I tested about 10 different fan suppliers, and not a single one yielded “100 percent real and targeted fans,” as promised. Most turned out to be fake profiles with a few real people mixed in the bunch. I even talked to page owners who’d bought fans, and not a single buyer got any increase in sales, nor engagement, after the purchase.
BuyRealFacebookFans.com:
Since Facebook marketing is the newest business obsession, we genuinely believe in our product and offer a 100 percent money-back guarantee on all orders. We are the Internet’s most reliable Facebook fan provider with a large number of satisfied customers. With us, you are a valued, important customer who deserves a great deal of value for the money.
Thor:
These services are always having issues with their PayPal accounts, which often get suspended. Some of the sellers demand payment upfront, and then never contact you again.
How can a brand or business acquire legitimate Facebook fans? More from Thor’s post:
Think about successful businesses you know of. Do you think they got that way by taking shortcuts and trying out quick fix after quick fix and eventually stumbled upon one that worked? Or did they carefully craft out working business models, take action, and modify their strategy until they got the results they wanted? Most likely the latter.
The kicker is, getting fans for your fan page isn’t that difficult! As long as you have a product or service that adds value to people’s lives, people will naturally like your page. You just need to know how to use the tools that Facebook gives you to give everyone a chance to learn more about you.
Some ways to do this include:
  • Facebook ads;
  • Contests and giveaways;
  • Fan-only discounts;
  • A reveal page;
  • Posting great content;
  • Using viral apps;
  • Asking your fans to tell their friends; and
  • Promoting your fan page.
And guess what happens when you do these things? You end up with a bunch of people who actually like your company and want to use your products and services.
Thor’s approach obviously involves more work, but the rewards at the end of the rainbow appear far more tangible.
Readers, have you ever tried any services that promise to boost your Facebook fan total quickly?

With one out of every 110 children receiving diagnoses of autism, parents are finding answers to questions about the neurological disorder on Facebook.
Many parents are finding that just posting questions about everything from diet, to finding health-care practitioners in their areas, to locating appropriate schooling for their child with autism, can be answered via Facebook.
Like parent Dolores Wilson says:
I am the mother of a newly diagnosed child who is two-and-a-half years old.  My husband and I knew something was wrong with our child and we didn’t want to turn a blind’s eye.  We sought answers and actually looked to Facebook for help.  We had general knowledge about autism, what new parent these days has not been made aware of it?  We posted questions on a few autism pages which were promptly answered by parents, and then, took our acquired info with us to our child’s pediatrician, who co-signed on what we had uncovered on Facebook.  It is a very trying and desperate time for us but we know we could always rely on other parents of children with autism via Facebook to offer encouragement, tips and support.

When Leah Gibbs, 23, of Tylorstown, South Wales, was imagining how her date with Adam Minton, 21, whom she met on Facebook, would end up, driving a getaway car wasn’t on her list of possible outcomes. But that’s exactly what happened.
According to Mail Online, when Gibbs arrived at Minton’s home, he asked her to give him a lift so that he could briefly visit a friend, so she drove him to a nearby shopping area. After five minutes, Minton rushed back to the car, yelling, “Go! Go! Go!,” and the “couple” returned to Minton’s house.
What Gibbs didn’t know, Mail Online reported, is that Minton entered a betting establishment while wearing a black bandana and brandishing a large kitchen knife, which he used to threaten a cashier into giving him £250 ($405.51), but the same cashier noted the registration number on her car.
According to Mail Online, when they arrived back at Minton’s home, Gibbs tried to terminate the date, saying that his demeanor toward her had become rude, and as Minton was trying to coax her into his home, the police arrived, arresting both of them.
Gibbs spent the night in jail before convincing authorities that she was not involved in the crime, Mail Online reported, adding that Minton was not so lucky, as he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years for robbery.
Gibbs told Mail Online:
I thought I would be ending the night in Adam’s arms. Instead, he had landed in the long arms of the law, and I was facing jail. I’m grateful that he told the police I knew nothing of the robbery, but still bitter that he involved me.

Facebook has 34 million users within India, and their favorite brand page on the site belongs to local cellular network provider, Tata Docomo.

Those are among the highlights of this very stylish infographic designed by Alive Now. Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments section beneath this post.

Facebook quietly launched a Like button browser extension for Chrome a couple months ago, TechCrunch has discovered today. The extension appears as a button to the right of the search and address box in the Chrome interface, and as an option in the right-click menu. As one might expect, it lets you like any web page, share content and your commentary back to Facebook, and see the number of other Facebook users who have liked a post.

Interestingly, it appears to have been released around when Google+ launched in late June, possibly in reaction to hints that Google had their own +1 button extension coming. Google did — but the product only just launched this week.

Maybe Facebook is planning a big push of the plugin at f8 or something? But the lack of promotion that the company has given the plugin suggests that it was a side project or test done by an individual or small team of engineers. As of now, the extension has 555 users.

It seems to work well enough from a user perspective, but could use a bit more polish. For example, if you Like one page, then use hotkey commands to go to other open tabs, the popout description of the Like will remain overlaying the browser.

The overall aim of this sort of feature is to get more users sharing more information through Facebook, and so make its site more valuable to developers and advertisers. It could also give Facebook additional data about its users.

As TechCrunch notes, some users have been concerned about these types of extensions sharing browsing activity and other sensitive information back to the parent company. If you use Facebook’s extension while you’re logged in to Facebook, the company says it will see the URL, your IP address, and when you visited the site. Both companies disclose what data their extensions access in their Chrome Web Store extension descriptions, so users should decide if they’re willing to share browsing activity in exchange for using the product. If it makes leery users feel any better, Facebook and Google both have a wide range of other ways to track users online identities and behaviors, as do countless other web companies.

Facebook has experimented with various types of persistent web interfaces over the years, notably browser toolbars and a navigation toolbar tested for a while in 2008 that appeared above any page that users had clicked to from inside the site. Some web companies, like StumbleUpon, have successfully used persistent browser add-ons to drive usage. Facebook has more often emphasized other ways of making its services effective beyond its home site, like Connect and Graph API-based products such as the Like button. Perhaps its ongoing interest in browser technology and development will result in more features like this extension.

Anonymous Vows to 'Destroy' Facebook on November 5, 2011

A YouTube video labelled as a message from Anonymous claimed that "Operation Facebook" would take place on November 5. its aim was to destroy the social network on the grounds that it abused the privacy of users, the video said.

We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy.

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.

Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. Source

You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.

The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.

Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.

This is our world now. We exist without nationality, without religious bias. We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. We have the right to not live as slaves.

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to create a brand page for Facebook if Photoshop could be used? Now it can, thanks to German digital communications agency 247Grad.

The company, which boasts clients including Deutsche Telekom and Procter & Gamble, developed the Facebook Page GUI (graphical user interface), which allows its developers to create entire pages for clients, in single Photoshop files, and then export and upload them to the social network.
This tool also creates Facebook plug-ins for websites using Photoshop.
Here’s how 247Grad describes the Facebook Page GUI:
Up to now, designing a Facebook page turned out to be quite complicated. Every graphic had to be prepared individually, uploaded in Facebook, readjusted, and uploaded again. This was performed many and many times to achieve one reasonable result — a time-killing and expensive process. Therefore, 247Grad PLC’s team of designers was trying to find a more effective solution. Their result is the Facebook GUI PSD! Here every graphic of a Facebook page is partitioned into individual layers. Now it’s possible to design an entire Facebook page in a quick, simple, and completed way. Subsequently, you only need to export and upload your files once.

A delicate dance of moves and counter moves between Facebook, Google Plus and app developers has broken out — evidenced by the changes in social games both companies announced on Thursday — and is leaving some wonder if the competition is getting to the social networking site.

Google Plus launched its game stream platform yesterday, and Facebook immediately replied with an announcement of its own set of games enhancements, explaining why their new homepage tweaks and enhancements are making games more accessible to users, as well as making it easier for friends to share game activities.

Talk about letting the games begin!

Now TechCrunch says that stealth new platform policies that Facebook announced last month may be a response to the rise of Google Plus.

What’s as noteworthy as the policies themselves is the fact that the changes were not announced on the developer blog or any of the usual places on Facebook.

Here’s the first significant policy change as reported by TechCrunch:

I.10. Applications may reward users with virtual currency or virtual goods in exchange for user actions that do not involve third parties, but rewards for user actions that involve third parties must be powered by Facebook Credits by integrating Facebook Credits offers.

That seems reasonable, as Facebook only wants its credit system used as a plethora of new credit systems and third party developers exist. Now, here’s the big change:

I.11. Apps on Facebook may not integrate, link to, promote, distribute, or redirect to any app on any other competing social platform.

That’s huge, and means that any app that runs on Facebook is prohibited from integrating or linking in any way linking to any app on a competing social platform.

While this new policy is consistent with Facebook’s advertising policies, the decision could affect a broad array of platforms including gamers, Google Plus and even Twitter.

And there’s a whiff of anti-competitiveness to the new policy, which probably account for the quiet manner in which the changes were rolled out.

TechCrunch quoted a Facebook spokesperson:

As many companies do, we have policies that prohibit apps from directing users to apps on competing social platforms. We recently updated these policies to ensure they’re clear for developers building on our platform.

But it’s really not very clear what the new policy means for standalone sites, such as Twitter. And it’s really such a bold move against Facebook’s competition that we wonder whether a public relations brouhaha is already brewing. Either Facebook is going to have to walk back the policies, or further explain its impact to specific audiences.

Readers, do you think Facebook’s new gaming changes and developer policies are anti-competitive?
